Overview

Located in the heart of Rivervale, The Fun Japanese Restaurant offers a refreshing take on authentic Japanese cuisine. Nestled at shop 6b/49 Great Eastern Hwy, this unassuming spot delivers a dining experience that balances quality, variety, and a welcoming atmosphere. Its charm lies not only in the thoughtfully curated menu but also in the approachable vibe that invites families, friends, and casual diners alike.

The restaurant’s focus on freshness and traditional flavors shines through their expertly crafted dishes. Sashimi enthusiasts will appreciate the pristine cuts and vibrant presentation, while tempura dishes, from mixed vegetables to prawn, maintain a delicate crispness without excess oil. Highlights such as sea urchin and chef specials showcase the kitchen’s dedication to authenticity and creativity, adding a touch of excitement beyond standard Japanese fare.

During lunch hours, the Bento offerings stand out—grilled options like teriyaki chicken, salmon, eel, and beef arrive balanced with complementary sides, making them a satisfying choice for a midday meal. However, bento selections are reserved and not typically available at dinner, shifting the focus toward a menu designed for shared plates and family-style dining.

The space itself is cozy and intimate, encouraging reservations especially during busier evening periods. The ambiance is casual yet refined, fostering a relaxed environment where patrons can comfortably savor their meals. Service is warm and attentive without feeling intrusive, contributing greatly to the overall enjoyable experience.

What makes The Fun particularly notable is its accessibility for anyone seeking a no-fuss, authentic Japanese meal that doesn’t compromise on quality. The blend of reasonable portion sizes, fair pricing, and fresh ingredients appeals to locals and visitors who value genuine flavors served in an inviting setting. Whether you’re new to Japanese cuisine or a seasoned fan, the menu promises approachable options with occasional surprises, like the truffle fried rice that has garnered praise for its unique twist.

Ultimately, The Fun Japanese Restaurant embodies a humble yet confident approach to Japanese dining in Perth’s Rivervale area—a gem quietly thriving among its neighbors. It is a place to relax, enjoy well-executed dishes, and experience the nuanced flavors of Japan without pretense. For anyone in the area, it’s well worth a visit to discover how a smaller space and sincere hospitality blend to create memorable meals.

Now under new management and a new name (previously called Swan Sushi). Went with friends to try it out. Sadly, no bento options were available during dinner time. The menu feels more family-oriented, and while the food was good, there wasn’t a real “wow” factor for me personally. The place isn’t very big, so it’s best to make a reservation if you’re going during dinner hours.

I was invited for dinner at “The Fun” Japanese Restaurant last week. My friend told me she couldn’t find any nice Japanese Restaurant in Perth which she is highly recommended. No matter the menu variety, food quality, portion size, atmosphere, service. ALL just perfect. Especially sashimi and sea urchin which is so fresh. Also, don’t miss out the Chef Special as well. Please keep your passionate on Japanese Food Concept and will definitely come back again.

Name lives up to it—this spot was actually fun. Came here for dinner and didn’t expect much at first, but the food surprised me. Everything we ordered was solid, no misses. The bento was legit—crispy katsu, fresh sashimi, good sides. Vibe is chill, not trying too hard, and the staff were friendly without being over the top. Felt comfortable just relaxing and enjoying the food. Portions were decent and pricing was fair for what you get. Would come back for sure. One of those easy, no-fuss Japanese places that does it right.

Had a special celebration dinner here and the food definitely fits the bill! This unassuming restaurant has some good quality stuff. My first time trying uni and it won’t be the last. Fresh fresh fresh. Will be back to try the rest of the menu that is more imaginative than the usual fare. (The truffle fried rice did not disappoint). The owner was very lovely and accommodating from ordering to when we accidentally spilled water (twice) on the table and floor. Also a very sweet dessert to commemorate the night.

It’s new restaurant. Beautiful plating for sashimi. We pick some special menu from blackboard. Chawan mushi is so impressive. Prawn flavour was so much and delicious. Chawan mushi is my favourite dish since I lived in my home country Japan. But this is the best one I had. It’s seasonal menu but must try.

Incredible food! The miso pork belly was insanely tender with a rich, umami flavor. The chawanmushi was silky-smooth and comforting, like a savory custard dream. And the caramel brûlée—perfect crack on top, creamy inside, not too sweet, just divine. Every bite was super yummy and full of amazing textures. Highly recommend!
